The best route to becoming a respected astrophysicist is by attending university. However in order to be accepted into university, one must first complete and excel in high school. The following five grade twelve courses are required: English-University Prep, Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry-University Prep, and Physics-University Prep. An overall average of at least 80% is required in order to get into university, however one should aim to achieve a higher average.
The minimum education required for all astrophysicists is an undergraduate degree in astrophysics or related fields such as physics, astronomy or mathematics. An undergraduate degree is crucial in order to become a lab tech or assistant. A master’s degree is compulsory for jobs with private companies including museums and observatories. For a higher and more respected position, a PhD or doctorate is mandatory. In fact 50% of all astrophysicists have comprised a PhD. |
Despite one’s position, a degree should always be preceded with a strong background in English, science, and computers.
I would highly consider studying at the University of Toronto for their excellent astronomy and astrophysics program. A bachelor’s degree would take four years to complete, while a master’s degree would take at least two years to complete. A PhD which in itself would require at least four years to complete, thus it will take a combined total of at least ten years of education and training in university to achieve my goal. The tuition expenditure for a four year undergraduate degree is $47,100 while the tuition cost for a two year master’s degree is $22,236. Finally for a four year PhD degree, the total cost would be $28,640. Combine that with the total charge for textbooks, incidental fees and other fees which are $7000, and ultimately the total cost of a minimum ten years of education and training, would equal to $104,976. |
